Win Some, Lose Some
I have a rule: I do not experiment on my dinner guests. Of course, that means that my family gets to be the lab rats for the Fumbling Foodie’s experiments. The results of tonight’s meal ranged from ‘never-again’ through ‘so-so’, to ‘good-enough-to-serve-guests’.
The ‘good-enough-to-serve-to-guests’ part was the roasted red onions. Man they were good.
The ‘never-again’ part was the baked cod. This was from a recipe in Laurent Tourondel’s Go Fish. I need to learn that cod recipes containing the phrase ‘big on flavor’ are probably not going to live up to that billing. Other than the spiciness induced by the red pepper flakes, it was pretty bland.
The salad had great curb appeal and really was not bad. Basically it was baby greens tossed in dressing of balsamic vinegar and olive oil, topped with a slice of prosciutto (yum!) with some braised, cheese-topped asparagus on the side.

Dave,
Nice blog! I loved your comment on Orangette’s blog about being a romantic guy– some guys woud rather be “right” about Valentine’s day being “icky” rather than putting their loved first and just doing something sweet. It is so nice to be someone who is with a romantic guy who makes a big deal out of an ancient holiday, a tribute to the martyred St. Valentine. And I’m sure your lady agrees… holidays can be fun if you just go with the flow…as Americans we spend like crazy, so being stingy on Valentine’s day would make no sense.
PS if your local library system has a book called “Floyd on Fish” by keith Floyd– you might enjoy looking at it.
I, on the other hand, always invite / serve guests with the adminition that they are my test kitchen. My palate suits me, but mine may not suit you.
I’m still working up the courage to bake more – I still need to crack the code on a good baking powder biscuit.
