Picky Eaters

Amy at Cooking with Amy and Barbara at Tigers & Strawberries started a conversation about picky eaters and it struck a nerve.

I really have no patience for the people who are picky for non-medical reasons. You know who I mean. It’s the kind of person who when the cauliflower comes around says, “I don’t eat white things. I’m not allergic or anything, I just don’t eat white things.” GGRRRRRRR!. And then, of course they expect you to cater to their idiosyncrasy. It’s self-centered and rude.

Yes, we all have things that we dislike and won’t eat. I abhor liver, for example, but I don’t expect the rest of the world to accomodate my abhorance of liver and make a fuss over me because of it. And if I am a guest in someone’s home and am served liver, I eat it. It’s the people who use picky eating as an attention-geting device that grate me.

I typically deal with picky eaters by just ignoring them. I am also able to surprise them now and them. I once had a woman say to me, “Dave, I normally HATE green beans but these are fantastic!”.

  1. I remember one of my husband’s best friends long ago wouldn’t eat anything green. No salads, no veggies, and so his meals were meats and carbs. When they came for dinner it was fried chicken, mashed potatoes and corn. I could understand it if someone tried something and didn’t like it, but to be that picky was absurd.

  2. I am in total agreement….I think people develop aversions to food that have eaten that has not been cooked well, or properly. My husband did not like salmon when we first married, but I made it anyway, and made it well. Now he requests it.
