Feeling Good About The Food I Eat
I can now proudly say that the Beef, Pork, Chicken, Eggs, and Fish that I cook and eat have been born, raised, harvested, processed, and packaged in the USA.
Since moving to rural Arizona three years ago, I’ve been working on eating local. This coronavirus this has caused me to put that effort into high gear. My eggs come from a guy ten miles down the road that raises chickens. (Honestly, I think he views his chickens more as pets.) My beef comes from a cattle rancher in Dewey, AZ.
Today I want to focus on the source of the chicken I buy. I buy it through Grass Roots Coop. It is a cooperative of small family-run farms committed to raising a d delivering the highest quality product. No GMOs. No Hormones. No Antibiotics. No Pesticides. Pasture raised. And best of all, I know that my purchase is supporting a a farmer doing his best to raise his family and conscientiously steward his land and animals.
Every package of chicken is labelled with exactly where it comes from. Right now I’m looking at a package of boneless skinless chicken things. The label plainly says “Sunny Side Farm, Tunas, Mo”. and “Processed by: Natural State Processing, 245 Quality Drive, Clinton, AR. Born Raised, and Harvested in the USA”.
Understandably, It costs a little more than the mystery chicken in the supermarket. And buy this way requires a little planning: About a week elapsed between ordering and delivery by Fed-Ex. But it is worth it.
